Glenlyon Estate was established by Jenny and Graham Ellender in 1994 which started as a purchase 40 acres of cleared land that had become infested with blackberries, gorse and broom. In 1996 the planting of pinot noir began.
Over the years, Ellender Estate, as they called it, grew to be a destination winery for visitors to the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region. The winery became famous for not only its Pinot but it’s Ellender sparkling, woodfire pizzas and two chocolate Labradors, named Red and Nelle.
At the start of 2016, the Ellenders sold the estate to Lee and I as we were looking to purchase a house in the area. We were very familiar with Daylesford and the surrounding areas as at that time we owned and managed B&B accommodation villas.
At the time of purchase, we knew that we’d have an issue with our first vintage due to late set frost in November and December of 2015. This frost damage wiped out around 80% of our harvest. Given the cost of picking we decided that our first vintage wouldn’t be 2016.
For the wine stock we already had on hand we re-branded to “Green Gully Road” wine this is our premium label for grapes grown on the Estate and wine made on the Estate.
Our original intention for the Estate was to focus on private events such as weddings, engagements and parties, corporate events and of course fine wine. In order to stay true to this vision, in June 2017 we decided to cease weekend cellar door and pavilion dining.
